The city of South St. Paul is home to a little over 20,000 residents and is one of the few undiscovered treasures in the metro area. Located just 8 miles south of St. Paul, South St. Paul is a small community that has a family-friendly atmosphere.  Much of the small city’s community was formerly shaped by its historical roots in the meatpacking industry that once dominated the area. In recent decades, however, the South St. Paul community has been shaped by its events, amenities, businesses, and organizations.

A major part of the community in South St. Paul are the many different events that the city organizes. The primary purpose of these events is to bring the community together to improve the overall quality of life.

One of the city’s largest and most popular events is Kaposia Days. The event is hosted in the month of June and is named in honor of the Kaposia Indian tribe who were the earliest settlers to South St. Paul. This family-oriented celebration includes several different active and leisure events such as fundraisers, a candidate showcase, formal dinner, medallion hunt, pool party, parade, and softball tournament.

Another popular event in South St. Paul is the Citywide Camp-Out. In recognition of National Get Outdoors Day, families are invited to enjoy an overnight camping experience in Lorraine Park. Here, residents will relish a community bonfire with s’mores and popcorn. Families also take part in glow in the dark games, a flashlight scavenger hunt raffle, board games, and a movie at sunset.

In the month of April, the city organizes its annual Giant Egg Hunt for kids ages 1-8, where kids are invited to hunt in Kaposia Park for candy and prizes.

Meatpacking was the primary industry of South St Paul before most of the plants were shut down in the later half of the 20th century. Since then, several new businesses have settled in the small city, becoming an integral part of the growing community.
