West Neighborhood

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, and with a population of 2,500 residents, St. Anthony West is a charming and peaceful community. The amazingly historic St. Anthony West is located right next to the east bank of the Mississippi River. It is known as the entryway to the Minneapolis Arts District from the northeast side and showcases a variation of affordable housing options, from lovely and historic 1880’s homes and delightful ramblers of the 1960s and 1970s to contemporary townhomes and condos. This neighborhood within the Northeast community is just minutes from downtown, and there are many transportation options available. The neighborhood hosts a 28-acre park along the river and several appealing restaurants, all just within a few minutes of walking. Several churches of numerous denominations help make the area a great place to live when looking for a place of worship. St. Anthony West is also proud to be the home of Minneapolis’ only Yacht Club. Housing options are mostly single-family and duplexes fluctuating in age and architectural type, but most are from the 1800’s to contemporary townhomes resting along the streets.

One important community piece is the Northeast Yacht Club located at the center of the neighborhood, and as mentioned before, the only one in the Minneapolis area. The Northeast Yacht Club specializes in sailboat racing as well as providing a community for those who love the sport of sailing. Races take place all throughout the summer, and Yacht Club members are able to participate in a host of social events in addition to racing.

There are several popular eateries located within the St. Anthony West neighborhood. Emily’s Lebanese Deli is one of the more unique options. Specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine, Emily’s ethnic foods are a local favorite. Elsie’s Restaurant, Bar & Bowling Center is another popular destination within the neighborhood. While the food consists of mostly traditional bar foods, Elsie’s does offer a selection of entrees and appetizers. Additionally, guests can enjoy the extensive bar and great bowling on site. Element Pizza is another fun dining option. Serving wood fired pizzas, Element Pizza is known for their fresh ingredients and delectable taste. Additionally, the offer delivery via a delivery service called Bite Squad.

The St. Anthony West neighborhood is home to three parks. They include:

Boom Island Park: Boom Island Park is one of the most scenic destinations within the St. Anthony West neighborhood offering several recreational amenities. A 22.5 acre park resting on the banks of the Mississippi River, Boom Island Park is a popular wedding destination or location for a family picnic. It affords incredible views of the river and the Minneapolis skyline. The park features biking and walking paths, a boat dock, picnic area with grill, restroom facility, and a playground. Perhaps the most unique aspect of Boom Island Park, however, is the picturesque lighthouse located along the river bank. While not a working lighthouse, it provides a unique tourist destination and wonderful backdrop for pictures.

BF Nelson Park: BF Nelson Park was named after Benjamin Franklin Nelson, a successful businessman from the area who owned a paper mill and roofing materials business in the 1880’s. The park is just under 12 acres in size and acts as a bridge between Boom Island Park and Nicollet Island. While there are very few amenities within the park, visitors can enjoy the walking paths along the Mississippi River and the Pioneer Statue. The Pioneer Statue is a 23 foot, granite statue depicting a pioneer family of three generations. Built in 1936, the statue is an historical destination and adds to the scenic nature of the area.

Dickman Park: While the smallest park located within the St. Anthony West neighborhood at just over 2 acres, Dickman Park is home to a wide array of amenities. Visitors can enjoy a basketball court, volleyball court, picnic area, playground, restroom facility, horseshoe pits, and a wading pool. The central location and plentiful amenities make Dickman Park a family favorite and great for active outdoor recreation.
