Overview of Wolfe

Park Neighborhood

The Wolf Park neighborhood is the largest geographical neighborhoods in St. Louis Park, covering a total of 385 acres of land. Wolfe Park lies in between the neighborhoods of Triangle and Minikahda Vista on the western side of the city. The neighborhood is bordered by the CP Railroad to the north, Highway 100 to the west, Excelsior Boulevard to the south, and Huntington Avenue and France Avenue to the east. Wolfe Park was the original location of the first developments of St. Louis Park by lumber baron Thomas Barlow Walker. However, it was not until the later part of the 20th century that Wolfe Park saw any commercial or residential growth. Today, residents enjoy the upscale living, fine dining, vast shopping options, and gorgeous forested parks in Wolfe Park.

Wolfe Park is a part of Ward 2 and boasts some of the finest housing options in the City of St. Louis Park. Housing is high density, with a total of 1,370 housing units in just  4 residential blocks. Of the 1,370 units, 34 are townhomes, 1,062 are apartments, 204 are condominiums, and 74 duplexes. The city’s premier housing redevelopment projects of Excelsior and Grand Commons are situated in the south end of Wolfe Park. These work-live-play communities offer a premium location to the best shops, dining, and entertainment options in the city. The luxurious apartments offer 56 studio, one, and two bedroom floorplans.

The neighborhood group organizes a few annual events throughout the year to unite the thriving and growing community. In the summer, the neighborhood gathers at Steel Toe Brewery for National Night Out. This family event features free food, police and fire trucks for kids, door prizes, and samples. Later in the summer the group also puts on a A Walk In The Park, which features a stroll around the perimeter of the neighborhood and appetizers afterward.

Wolfe Park is the center of retail development and a shoppers paradise. Along Excelsior Boulevard, residents will find boutiques, high-end jewelry shops, and shopping centers. One of the most popular establishments is Fun Sisters Boutique, which sells fun clothing and accessories at an affordable price. Exquisite chocolates shops such as Mayana and Sucre can also be found along the busy retail center, where gourmet chocolates are crafted. Another popular shopping and dining destination is the Miracle Mile Mall. The shopping center houses a wide assortment of popular stores such as New Balance, Iverson’s Imports, Drooling Moose, Woody’s Furniture, along with a few restaurants.

A little over 24 percent of Wolfe Park consists of parks and open spaces. Wolfe Park is located between Excelsior Boulevard & Grand and the Recreational Center. The park features a pavilion that hosts events throughout the year, several walking trails, a playground, basketball court, fishing pond, and sand volleyball court. The Veterans’ Memorial Amphitheater is terraced into a hill on the south side of the park. The amphitheater hosts concerts and weddings in the summertime with enough seating for 200 people.

The St. Louis Park Recreational Center is also located in Wolfe Park and offers several amenities to the public, including an outdoor aquatic park. In the center, two ice skating rinks are maintained throughout the year, along with a banquet hall and gallery room that can be rented by the public.

Another large park in the neighborhood is Bass Lake Park, which is spread out over 52 acres of wetland and woodland. Bass Lake is a popular destination for anglers, but it also has amenities such as a playground, sun shelter, and pickleball courts.

Even though the Wolfe Park neighborhood is technically a suburb, it lies just 7.5 miles southwest of Minneapolis and all the amenities offered. Commuters can take advantage of the suburban buses that run from Excelsior and catch a ride to city. However, even with its close proximity to Minneapolis, Wolfe Park retains the quietness of a residential neighborhood.
