Overview of Pennsylvania

Park Neighborhood

The Pennsylvania Park neighborhood is located in north central St. Louis Park between the neighborhoods of Eliot and Westwood Hills. Pennsylvania Park is in Ward 4 and is bordered by I-394 to the north, Franklin Avenue to the south, Louisiana to the east, and Texas Avenue to the west. The majority of the houses were built in the 1950’s. However, several houses were constructed before 1920’s and a few just before World War II. The average year of housing units is 1954.

Pennsylvania Park covers a total of 145.7 acres of land and the neighborhood’s population totals to 779 residents. Of the 313 housing units in the community, 304 are single family houses and 9 are townhouses. Around 17 percent of Pennsylvania Park is parkland and 4 percent is commercial establishments.

All of the commercial uses are located in the north end of the neighborhood along the frontage road to I-394. Restaurants include Perkins and Benihana Minneapolis Japenese Steak House. The steakhouse establishment has a rich and long heritage that dates back to 1964 in Harlem. Since then, Benihana has branched out with hundreds of new restaurants in cities across the country, including St. Louis Park. The restaurant is a popular destination to enjoy authentic teppanyaki cooking.

St. Louis Park Middle School is situated in the southwest corner of the neighborhood and is the only middle school in the city. St. Louis Middle serves close to 1,000 students in grades 6-8 and makes use of rigorous academics in an accountable, purposeful, and responsive organization. Class sizes are around 18 students, with 51 teachers employed full time at the school. The mission of the staff and teachers is to create a caring community that promotes intercultural respect, engages students in rigorous academics, and ignites individual growth.

No neighborhoods parks are located in Pennsylvania Park. However, Lamplighter Park is a popular destination for anglers during the summer and autumn months. The pond is stocked with Bluegills, Black Crappies, and Common Carp. Walking trails that wind around the pond are also available for residential use.
