The last thing you want on a trip is to worry about your house.
A few simple steps before you leave can make your home look lived in and keep small problems from becoming big ones.
Here’s a checklist.
Before you leave
- Ask a trusted friend to grab packages, check the house and keep the yard and driveway tidy.
- Hold your mail online with the U.S. Postal Service.
- Wait to post trip photos until you’re home.
- Tell your alarm company who will be checking in, and consider letting police know for a long trip.
- Use light timers or smart bulbs on different schedules.
- Unplug electronics to save power and protect against surges.
- Don’t hide a key. Burglars know every hiding spot.
A Minnesota winter tip
Leaving in winter? Keep the heat on, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, and know where your main water shutoff is. See Shutting Off Your Water.
Check your coverage
A quick review with Intrinsic Insurance can confirm what’s covered if something happens while you’re away. Read How’s Your Memory? on making a home inventory.
A simple plan for your protecting your home while you travel move
I’ve been helping people buy and sell homes across the west metro for about two decades, and I build and remodel luxury homes too. I’ll help you see both what a property is and what it could be.
Getting the house ready, or making it yours
If you’re selling and want repairs handled before buyers see them, Super Crew Contractors can give you an estimate. If you’re ready for something custom, Ivy Lane Homes does luxury home building and remodeling. And a quick coverage check with Intrinsic Insurance before closing can save you a surprise. Please note: I don’t handle rentals or property management. I work with buyers and sellers, and that’s where I can help you most in protecting your home while you travel.
Stay close to the market, without the noise.
