Overview of South

Oak Neighborhood


Between the City of Hopkins to the west and Elmwood neighborhood to the east is the South Oak Hill neighborhood. South Oak Hill is bordered by Highway 7 to the north, CP Railroad to the east and south, and the City of Hopkins to the west. A total of 770 residents call South Oak Hill home. The 197-acre neighborhood is 28 percent commercial/industrial and 8 percent parks and open spaces. The South Oak Hill neighborhood is a part of the subdivision that took place in 1892. South Oak Hill is home to some of the oldest houses in the City of St. Louis Park. These houses are known as “Walker Houses” after local businessman Walker who built them to house the workforce for his factories.

 

South Oak Hill is comprised of 12 residential blocks with the average year of single family houses dating back to 1947. Of the 300 housing units in the neighborhood, 288 are single family houses and 12 are duplexes. There are also two different apartments in the area known as Somerset Oaks and Louisiana Oaks Apartments. Almost all commercial and industrial establishments are located on the east side of the neighborhood along the CP Railroad.

 

No dining options exist in South Oak Hill. However, residents who venture to northwest will find numerous restaurants including White Castle, Five Guys, Applebee’s, Panera, and Smashburger. A local favorite in the area is Blaze Pizza. The hip-counter serve joint creates delicious pizzas from scratch, using only the freshest ingredients. The establishment prides itself on its speedy assembly line that uses artisanal ingredients. A Costco is also located in the industrial east side of the neighborhood for grocery needs.

 

Edgebrook Park: Edgebrook Park is the only park located in South Oak Hill.Sign of Edgebrook Park in St. Louis Park, Minnesota Residents can enjoy ice skating on the park’s popular skating rink in the winter and in the warmer months make use of the playground and basketball court.

 

Louisiana Oaks Park: This park though not situated within the South Oak Hill neighborhood is located just north of the community and offers even more amenities such as soccer and baseball fields, a playground, and ski and walking trails.
