The more you have, the more you have to take care of, and the harder it is to find the things you actually use.
Every so often, it’s worth going through every closet, drawer, cabinet and storage space. It’s also one of the best things you can do before selling.
Here’s a simple way to tackle it.
Ask three questions
- When did I last use it?
- Will I really use it again?
- Do I keep it for sentimental reasons?
Four ways to let things go
Give it to someone who’ll appreciate it. Sell it at a garage sale or online. Donate it to charity, and keep the receipt in case it’s deductible. Or toss it.
Start with the closet
If you haven’t worn it in five years, let it go. Not sure? Move it to another closet. If a year passes and you never reach for it, it’s time.
For paper records, scanning and cloud storage can replace boxes, and it costs far less than a storage unit.
Selling soon?
Buyers notice space. Clear counters, closets and storage areas make a home feel bigger. See my home staging guide and moving checklist, or start with a home value estimate.
A simple plan for your decluttering move
I’ve been helping people buy and sell homes across the west metro for about two decades, and I build and remodel luxury homes too. I’ll help you see both what a property is and what it could be.
Getting the house ready, or making it yours
If you’re selling and want repairs handled before buyers see them, Super Crew Contractors can give you an estimate. If you’re ready for something custom, Ivy Lane Homes does luxury home building and remodeling. And a quick coverage check with Intrinsic Insurance before closing can save you a surprise. For the local picture, read my Chaska homes guide or browse neighborhoods in Chanhassen and Victoria.
Your next step in decluttering
Every move is different. When you’re ready to talk about yours, I’m a call or text away.
Please note: I don’t handle rentals or property management. I work with buyers and sellers, and that’s where I can help you most in decluttering.
Stay close to the market, without the noise.
Every so often I send a short, practical note: what Twin Cities homes did, prep tips that are worth the money, and neighborhoods worth a look.
Thank you! You’re on the list.
I’m glad you’re here. A quick confirmation is on its way to your inbox. Whenever you want to talk about your own home or a move, I’m a call or text away.
