St. Mary’s Point, Minnesota is a quiet, residential community with history linked to some of Minnesota’s earliest settlers. By 1837, various French-Canadian families had settled in the St. Mary’s Point area.

Farming was the primary occupation of many in the area. In about 1844, Paul Carli moved to St. Mary’s Point from Stillwater to open a farm. Between 1845-1846, Lemuel Bolles, from New York, established the first successful mill in the valley, and Bolles Creek was named after him.

Speculators began to buy land in the area in 1848. Early success of the sawmills in Afton and Lakeland drew the men in.

Investors expected a boom along the St. Croix around 1900. John Humbird bought 40 acres and built summer houses for his daughters. George Slater built a home and 12 cottages in 1915 along the river. Development continued.

Today, the city of St. Mary’s Point is a peaceful community along the St. Croix River with a population of about 370.
