Located in the Southeast corner of both Dakota County, and the South Twin Cities Metro as a whole, Coates, Minnesota, is a small city of just over 150 residents. This small community was named after Civil War Captain Henry Coates.  He served in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry during that era.

The main employment opportunities within the community are in the trucking, moving, and recycling services. The city is popular for the House of Coates, a burger resturant which was founded in 1962. According to the official boundary measurements, the city has a geographical area of 1.41, all of it land. For those looking for calm and uncomplicated living, but wanting to still be on the fringes of suburban life, the city of Coates offers the best version of both worlds.
