The area was first inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwe Indians who used the area as a part of their migratory hunting and harvesting grounds. The area was originally given to the Dakota Indians in the treaty of 1825 but was later purchased from the Dakota for settlement. The area was attractive to settlers and pioneers because of the beautiful scenery surrounding the lake. The region around the lake was full of rich soil and game for hunting, adding to what already made it an attractive place to settle. By the time Minnesota became a state in 1858, White Bear Lake Township was established and the area around the Lake continued to grow. Several hotels, restaurants, theatres, and stores lined the the shores of White Bear Lake, which drew more people to the area. The lake’s beauty is what made the area so attractive to the original settlers and the same holds true today.

Memorial Beach Park is the perfect place to take a swim on White Bear Lake. Memorial Beach is open to all residents featuring excellent facilities, picnic tables, and fun for all. The beach is just across the street from West Park, offering several more activities for residents to enjoy. West Park features a baseball field, pavilion, grills, playground equipment, and picnic tables.
Another park situated on White Bear Lake is Matoska Park, featuring several recreational amenities for all to enjoy. Matoska Park features numerous aquatic amenities as well as your typical park amenities. Matoska Park provides several boating facilities including boat docks and landings, canoe docks, canoe racks, and sailboat docks and moorings. Other amenities within the park include a gazebo, historical monument, memorials, park benches, and picnic tables. Matoska Park is the perfect destination to start a fun day out on the water.

The mission of White Bear Yacht Club is to provide the members and guests of the club with an exceptional social, dining, and recreational experience at the club’s unique and distinctive setting on the shores of White Bear Lake. Some of the amenities offered by the club include yachting, golfing, tennis, and swimming. White Bear Yacht Club was established in 1889 with tennis courts being added in 1890 and the golf facilities added in 1912. With its beautiful lakeside location and outstanding facilities, White Bear Yacht Club is widely known as one of the best clubs in the Twin Cities.
Downtown White Bear Lake offers numerous shopping, dining and entertainment options for all residents to enjoy.
