Brookside neighborhood is located in southern St. Louis Park between the neighborhoods of Creekside and Browndale. The neighborhood is bordered by Excelsior Boulevard to the north, Highway 100 to the east, Brookside Avenue to the west, and the City of Edina to the south. Overall, Brookside encompasses 116 acres of land, with 12 blocks of residential space. Commercial occupation is low, totaling to only 5.2 percent of the neighborhood. The first official settlers to Brookside were Edward and Thomas Self from England, although most settlers to Brookside would later come from New England. In 1924, Brookside and Oak Hill attempted to succeed from St. Louis Park, mainly because the two neighborhoods felt that the Village had neglected them certain improvements. The attempt, however, failed, leaving Brookside and Oak Hill as neighborhoods of the Village.
Brookside has a total population around 780 residents. In 1908, the neighborhood was subdivided, with one-half of the homes being built prior to 1933. Except for one condo complex, Brookside housing is entirely single family homes.
The Brookside steering committee was formed in 1999 for the purpose of building the community. The organization plans several annual events throughout the year for the neighborhood, including Progressive Night Out. On this fun night, the committee visits different houses in Brookside for conversation, appetizers, and beverages. Other community events include block parties, outdoor movies in the park, ice cream socials, a patriotic parade, ice skating and sledding parties, pizza in the park, garage sales, and more.
Because of its low commercial and retail establishments, residents of Brookside venture to nearby neighborhoods for shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Located across Excelsior Boulevard is Bunny’s Bar & Grill. Established in 1933, Bunny’s is the traditional meeting place for locals to relax with friends, enjoy a meal, and watch a game. The grill and bar serves Classic American food and and craft beers. Across Highway 100 from Bunny’s is the well-established Granite City Food & Brewery. Granite City has received awards for Best Restaurant, Best Patio, Best Brunch, Best Martini, Best Burger, and more. The pride of the restaurant is its on-site brewery that creates hand-crafted micro-brews.
Jackley Park: Jackley Park is the only park located with the neighborhood of Brookside. The park features a grass-infield softball field, a shelter behind home plate, and picnic tables displaying local art. A basketball hoop and playground are also located in Jackley Park.
