Birchwood is a stylish neighborhood situated in the heart of St. Louis Park. The City of St. Louis Park underwent extensive population growth after World War II. In the 1940s and 1950s, approximately seven people moved into the area per day. Because of this, about sixty percent of the homes in the area were built during this time. Today, St. Louis Park continues to thrive, and Birchwood is at the center of its growth.
St. Louis Park’s Birchwood neighborhood is laid out over 266.3 acres, with about 26 residential blocks. The Birchwood neighborhood consists of 1,037 housing units, 629 single family homes, 159 townhomes, 245 apartment units, and 4 duplexes. This charming neighborhood is home to approximately 2,213 residents who enjoy countless amenities available.
Within the community, the neighborhood association of Birchwood, established in 1996, sponsors many events. Birchwood hosts events for the community, which include summer outdoor movie nights, a winter party, an ice cream social and happy hour. The winter party is held at Birchwood Park, offering hot cocoa and wagon rides. Birchwood locals take pride in the Birchwood Community Garden. This garden, situated at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, has been enjoyed by residents for about 20 years. Locals grow kale, beets, lettuce, brussel sprouts, and about a dozen other vegetables and herbs.
The Shops at West End are situated in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood and draw visitors from the surrounding metro area. This shopping mall features an attractive range of businesses, including the ICON Movie Theatre. The ICON Movie Theatre offers VIP tickets which allow visitors to enjoy a meal and drinks before, after or even during movies. Locals take advantage of endless restaurant options within the community as well. Vitali’s Bistro Cafe serves homemade kosher crepes, soups, salads, sandwiches as well as organic teas and coffee. At Vitali’s, visitors enjoy live music and playing board games along with their delicious food. Enjoy sushi at Raku, an upscale Japanese fushion restaurant at West End. Or visit Cooper, a fun and energetic Irish pub and restaurant. With an abundance of dining and entertainment options within the community, there is something for everybody.
Birchwood neighborhood is home to two parks as well as an abundance of green spaces. Parks include:
Birchwood Park: Birchwood Park is a neighborhood park with much to offer. Locals take advantage of play equipment, a park building, a ball field, a volleyball court, and a basketball court. This park is enjoyed year round because of its skating rink and hockey rink.
Sunshine Park: Sunshine Park is a quaint park that is ideal for picnicking or walking a dog. This park features play equipment and basketball.
