The South Cornelia neighborhood, with a population of 1,450 residents, is situated in the Southeast quadrant of the city of Edina. It is bordered on the north by 70th Street, on the east by France Avenue, on the south by the borders of Lake Edina Park along with Fred Richards Golf Course, and finally on the west by properties of West Shore Drive. At the heart of this mainly residential neighborhood are Cornelia Elementary School and its school park.
By the time that the initial development was established and the very first homes were constructed in South Cornelia during the late 1950’s, the perfect suburban model had been achieved. Streets were not laid out in a typical grid, but on the flip side were not too windy that a builder couldn’t maximize the number of lots available. Nearly every lot in the subdivision is around 0.23-0.27 acre, ideal for the space afforded to most suburban homes. You can find many authentic mid-century homes throughout the South Cornelia neighborhood. Nearby amenities include Lake Cornelia, nearby trails and paved paths for walking and biking, the Edina Aquatic Center, and Rosland Park. South Cornelia is a “school zone” and is built around the Cornelia School and Park, the hub of neighborhood activity for the area. Of the 1,000 or so homes, most are two-story ramblers. In addition to the natural beauty, which will only be enhanced by the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail that will be coming to the area by 2017, the neighborhood is also very close to retail nirvana, with the Galleria, Southdale Center, and many grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Byerly’s, Cub Foods, and Target.
The South Cornelia neighborhood is home to one park:
Cornelia School Park: Cornelia School Park services the local elementary school in addition to being a sports center for the local neighborhood. At 10.75 acres, the park is full of wonderful amenities for visitors. The park contains a playground, two softball fields, a baseball field, tennis courts, and a hockey rink.
