You can find the best of urban living in Morningside at 44th and France, which is a vibrant Edina neighborhood community located near Linden Hills in Minneapolis. It’s peaceful cafes, unique shops, and relaxing pubs are scattered throughout its limits.
Morningside has always been a little different from the rest of Edina. There is still no explanation for the name of the area, but it may be suggestive that Morningside is a neighborhood or suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland, and that Edina is a shortened form of Edinburgh. With a population of 1,700 residents, the neighborhood is situated in the Northeast quadrant of the city. It is bordered on the north by 40th Street, on the east by France Avenue, on the south by Sunnyside Road, and on the west by Natchez Avenue. This neighborhood hosts the popular Weber Park, which got its name from a resident of the area, George Weber. Weber served as the old village’s (now the neighborhood), only police officer, janitor, and church deacon. Morningside offers a historic and distinct community.
The neighborhood developed along the Como-Harriet Streetcar line as the connecting point for Linden Hills in Minneapolis and Edina. The Grimes family established Morningside in 1905 as farmland. The Morningside community separated from Edina in 1920 to become its own independent village. It didn’t choose to reinstate again until 1966. Residents of the unique neighborhood appreciate the fact that the area upholds much of its village-like environment.
To this day Morningside’s houses are unique from other neighborhoods. The 350 plus homes in Morningside were built primarily in the first three decades of the 20th century, with bungalows and two-story ramblers as the predominant styles. Morningside neighborhood also possesses the private, Calvin Christian School for students in grades K-8. Additionally, residents of Morningside can enjoy living just a few minutes walking distance away from beautiful Lake Harriet and the whole Minneapolis Chain of Lakes.
One of the most famous eateries in the area can be found within the Morningside neighborhood. The Convention Grill is located in the south end of Morningside. A staple of the community since 1934, the Convention Grill offers a classical American diner atmosphere. Patrons will enjoy the retro decor, juicy burgers, and delicious malts that can be found at the restaurant. With numerous booths and an open kitchen where guests can watch their meal being prepared, the Convention Grill offers great food in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
The Morningside neighborhood is home to two parks. They include:
Weber Park: This 12-acre recreational park established in 1948 offers a hockey rink and warming house, softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball court, and children’s playground. The park was named in 1950 after George Weber. While both Calvin Christian School and the local Golden Years Montessori School utilize the park for school programming, it is also open to the public. The park’s central location makes it convenient for all.
Yale Gardens Park: Yale Gardens Park is another park found primarily within the Morningside neighborhood. While mainly serving as an open space for the nearby Susan Lindgren Elementary School, Yale Gardens Park is a great location to throw a frisbee or exercise the dog. In addition, visitors can utilize the soccer nets found within the park for a game of soccer.
