Seward, a neighborhood in the Longfellow community, is bordered on the north by Interstate 94, and on the east by the Mississippi River. The neighborhood is named for William Seward, who was the secretary of state under Abraham Lincoln. Of the neighborhood’s 390 acres, half is residential and almost one-fifth is industrial. The industrial practices are located along Minnehaha and Snelling avenues and 27th Street East in the southwestern area of the neighborhood.
Seward is attached to downtown, the international airport and the Mall of America through the light-rail line. Seward’s knowledge of community and combination of residential, commercial, and industrial uses gives the neighborhood the sensation of an urban village within a large city area. Seward has a blend of housing types, with larger high and mid-rise apartment buildings, duplexes that are available, and single-family homes from the late 1800’s. With a population of over 7,500 residents, this urban wilderness is a great community in which to live.
One of Seward’s most cherished organizations is the Seward Co-op. The Seward neighborhood is home to one park:
Matthews Park: Matthews Park is the only park found within the Seward neighborhood. At 10 acres, it offers a good variety of amenities for its guests. Included within the park is a basketball court, biking/walking paths, a broomball rink, garden, picnic area with grill, hockey rink and ice skating rink, soccer field, softball field, tennis court, sand volleyball court, and a wading pool. Additionally, the park is home to a recreation center offering further amenities for guests including a community kitchen and a gymnasium.
