Lake Nokomis is a beautiful lake located in the southern part of Minneapolis just south of Lake Hiawatha. Lake Nokomis is a popular destination during the summer months for numerous recreational activities surrounding the lake. Lake Nokomis features boating, paddle boarding, canoeing, swimming beach, walking paths, biking paths, and more. Lake Nokomis covers an area of 204 acres with a maximum depth of 33 feet. Lake Nokomis is also a popular place for fishing with numerous species of fish including black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, bowfin, walleye, yellow perch, and more. Lake Nokomis is a beautiful scenic lake full of outdoor recreational activities and buzzing with activity during the summer months.
Lake Nokomis was purchased by the city of Minneapolis in 1908 under the name Lake Amelia. It was named Lake Amelia in honor of George Goodings daughter Amelia in 1819. The name was later changed in 1910 to Nokomis, the grandmother of Hiawatha. When the lake was purchased by Minneapolis, the lake was was mostly marshland and was 5 feet at its maximum depth. The city then dredged the lake deepening the lake and creating parkland and beaches along the shores making it the lake it is today.
Lake Nokomis is surrounded the East Nokomis neighborhood made up of Keewaydin, Minnehaha, Morris Park, Wenonah. East Nokomis is made up of small houses with various architectural designs along tree lined streets. The neighborhood is also full of numerous small businesses. East Minnehaha is a beautiful neighborhood with much to offer.
Lake Nokomis is surrounded by several parks and beaches offering numerous recreational activities. Lake Nokomis park is a 405 acre park featuring numerous amenities along the shores of Lake Nokomis. Lake Nokomis Park features 2.7 miles of walking trails, 2.8 miles of bike trails, baseball field, beach, football field, fishing pier, parking lot, pickleball court, softball field, soccer field, tennis court, hockey rink, playground equipment, and more. Lake Nokomis Park is an the perfect place to enjoy the beauty surrounding Lake Nokomis. Lake Nokomis is also home to 50th street beach and main beach.
There are several amenities and attractions surrounding Lake Nokomis that residents within the community can enjoy. Hot Plate is diner in south Minneapolis just west of Lake Nokomis offering unique one-of-a-kind dishes. Hot Plate offers excellent breakfast dishes featuring eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, waffles, pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, and more. Hot Plate is an excellent destination for a great meal.
