The first pioneers settled in the area around what is now known as Ramsey because of the trading industry along the Mississippi River. The settlers came to the area on a steamboat called The Governor Ramsey named after the first governor of Minnesota, which is where the city of Ramsey got its name.
In 1857, a township was organized named Watertown, but in 1858 the Anoka County commissioners changed the name to Dover. Later in 1858 the name was changed again to Ramsey after the first territorial governor of Minnesota. In 1974 Ramsey Township was incorporated as a city.
Today the city of Ramsey is a thriving community that has continued to grow over the years. The population of Ramsey has grown from 10,000 in 1980 to nearly 25,000 today. Ramsey is home to nearly 6,000 houses and 5,200 families. Ramsey has become an attractive community because of it’s rural character with wetlands, wildlife, and numerous housing options including houses on large lots and urban homes. Ramsey is home to over 100 businesses including Connexus Energy, Life Fitness, and many more.
