Tonka Bay, Minnesota is one of the lakeshore cities located in the western metro, next to Lake Minnetonka, and is a part of Hennepin County. With an area of a 1-square mile and a population of close to 1,500 residents, the city has more shoreline on Lake Minnetonka than any of the other cities of its size. The city contains many old estates that add to the history of the town. Today, the city is mainly residential. There are around 651 homes in Tonka Bay, with 310 houses located on the lake’s shores. The residents enjoy the city’s wonderful lakeside living together as Lake Minnetonka provides much of the city’s entertainment and recreational options. On most summer days, you can see the waters full of plenty of activity.
Because of its smaller size, the local families in the area are able to appreciate a more private way of living. That being said, Tonka Bay is by no means isolated, as it is conveniently located near bigger, more commercial cities. Tonka Bay is just 30 minutes west of Minneapolis, and in between the larger cities of Eden Prairie to the south, Minnetonka to the east, and Plymouth to the north. The main route through the city is Manitou Road, which provides access to the nearby cities, and larger Highways such as State Highway 7.
