The city of Stillwater, Minnesota is home to its own school district. Stillwater Area Public Schools (Independent School District #834) serve students in grades K-12 living in the cities of Afton, Bayport, Baytown Township, Grant, a portion of Hugo, Lake Elmo, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, Marine on St. Croix, May Township, Oak Park Heights, St. Mary’s Point, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, West Lakeland Township, Withrow, and a portion of Woodbury. A large district that stretches for 30 miles along the River and covers an area of 150 square miles, SAPS enrolls approximately 8,300 students and employs more than 1,000 individuals. The district includes 10 elementary schools (K-6th grade), 2 junior high schools (grades 7-9), and 1 high school (grades 10-12). The district also offers early childhood and alternative learning options for students.
For residents of Stillwater, elementary-aged students will attend one of four schools. Options include Oak Park Elementary, Rutherford Elementary, Stonebridge Elementary, and Lily Lake Elementary, with the determining factor being geographical location. Each of the elementary schools offer students welcoming, comfortable environments where students can learn to be creative as well as prepare for further education.
Middle school locations are determined based on where students were enrolled for elementary school. All four of the elementary schools that service Stillwater feed students into Stillwater Junior High. Students from the southern cities within the district, on the other hand, are enrolled in Oakland Junior High. Stillwater Junior High is home to more than 1,000 students of which 80% participate in an after school activity. With numerous sports, clubs, and programs to get involved with, students have lots of extracurricular opportunities.
Stillwater Area High School is the oldest high school in the state having been accredited in 1903. Since then it has set about creating an environment that is catered to prepare students for excellence. With around 2,200 students on a 139 acre site, SAHS offers plenty of programs and extracurriculars designed to get students involved and active within their community. Academics are rigorous and exceptional at preparing students for higher-education as well as the workplace. With Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings, 34 varsity sports, 28 extracurricular clubs, and renowned music as well as cross country programs, SAHS is a fantastic school for students in grades 10-12.
