With close to 56,000 residents, the City of Lakeville is the 16th most populous city in Minnesota. In recent years, the city has experienced a population boom and is one of the fastest growing cities in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metro area. With around 38 square miles of land area and a location approximately 23 miles south of downtown Minneapolis, the bedroom community of Lakeville is a premier suburb that offers residents both spacious living and easy access to the Twin Cities. The community of Lakeville is shaped by its vast land area and numerous amenities and activities offered to residents.
One of the largest factors that shapes the city of Lakeville is the different annual events that are designed to bring the community together. Starting in 1967, the community of Lakeville gathers together during the week of July 4th to celebrate Panorama of Progress. Panorama of Progress, also affectionately known as the Pan-O-Prog festival, is a weeklong celebration of the success of the development of Lakeville’s Airlake Industrial Park. The festival has over 50 events and activities that include a parade, classic car cruise, tournaments, pageants, battle of bands, music, crafts, outdoor dancing, a medallion hunt, cookouts, and of course fireworks. Another popular event in the city is the Lakeville Art Festival. The festival is held in the month of September on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center. This event includes a featured art exhibit, artist demonstrations, a youth art tent, food vendors, and local talent. Artists booths are set up in a circular arrangement to allow an intimate and accessible setting.
Lakeville is also built around its numerous amount of amenities. One of these amenities is the Heritage Library in Lakeville. The library provides residents with a vast amount of resources and access to the Dakota County database.
Fur-Ever-Wild is an outdoor agricultural farm teaching everyone about the great outdoors. Visitors can come to learn about North American Fur-bearing animals, hunting, fishing, trapping, and agricultural animals. The farm includes photos, live demonstrations, and profiles of resident animals.
There are many different organizations and businesses that help to shape the community in Lakeville. The Lakeville Area Arts Center is an organization that promotes cultural enrichment and artistic experiences for the entire community by offering many unique youth and adult classes as well as a variety of theatrical productions. Another important organization is the Downtown Lakeville Business Administration. This nonprofit organization works to create a unique “downtown” business environment which blends the cultural, historical, and economic opportunities of a rapidly growing community situated in a major metropolitan area. The local Lions Club is another important organization which has around 50 members. The organization is known for its fight against blindness, volunteering for community projects, feeding the hungry, and aiding seniors and the disabled.
Lakeville’s events, amenities, and organizations are the cornerstones of its thriving and growing community. Another factor, however, is its location. Lakeville is known for its spacious setting and bedroom community. On the southern fringe of the metro area with Interstate 35 running through the city, residents of the city also enjoy the 30-minute commute to downtown Minneapolis.
