In 1852, the area of Crystal, Minnesota became a part of Hennepin County. However, Crystal was not an official city, as was it actually called the Crystal township. This township began to grow geographically, as it had boundaries in modern-day Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, and Crystal. The township was forced to become incorporated into Crystal village when the state’s government wanted to gain more taxable property in 1887.
In the next few years, Crystal village was visited by Andrew B. Robbins. This talented man began to build and develop more homes in the small village, allowing it to grow. Robbins purchased 90 acres near the Lower Twin Lake. He platted much of the area as the Robbinsdale Park subdivision. Most of this area was located in what is now known as Robbinsdale, while small portions were set in Crystal. Along with this residential development, the village experienced an industrial boom. Since Crystal Village was close to Minneapolis, an overflow of businesses flooded the location.
This area was separated into two parts, with one-half named Robbinsdale after the builder, and the other half taking on the name of the original township. All of the took place in the mid-1890’s. However, Crystal did not become an official city until 1960, and it established itself as mainly a residential city.
