In 1945 a man by the name of V.S. Petersen helped build a cooperative village on 1,203 acres of land near Baldwin Lake. The cooperative was designed to give homeowners equal shares in the cooperative association that owned and developed the town. The cooperative village was named Circle Pines after the symbol that represented the cooperative, which was a pine tree with a circle around it. After three years the cooperative was abandoned because of financial problems and disagreements between leaders of the cooperative.
