Spread out over around 36 square miles of land, the City of Hugo, Minnesota has plenty of space for its residents to enjoy.
Parks and trails are a big part of what people love about living here. Here’s a quick guide.
Here’s an honest look, whether you’re buying or selling.
Parks and trails in Hugo
The city maintains 13 different parks that contain woods, ponds, lakes, prairies, and more. Throughout these parks there are a variety of different amenities and recreational activities to experience. Some of the most notable parks include:
Lions Park: Located on 8.1 acres of land, Lions Park is well-known in the community and is the home for Hugo Good Neighbor Days. The park is a popular destination for sporting events with two baseball/softball fields, an open space that’s used for soccer games, two tennis courts, a basketball court, and bleachers for fans. The park also contains a playground with a sandbox for kids to enjoy. The park is a popular destination in the summer for picnicking, with a rentable shelter that houses a kitchenette, and several grills that are spread throughout the park grounds. Perhaps the most unique feature to Lions Park is the skate park, which is enjoyed by residents and visitors from neighboring cities.
Oak Shore Park: Situated between Oak Shore neighborhood and the Woods of Bald Eagle Lake neighborhood is the newly constructed Oak Shore Park. Built in 2008, this 10-acre park features a forest themed playground and sand play equipment. A shelter is also available for rent and an open field can be used for sport like soccer and football. A tar half-court basketball court and horseshoe pit are also located on the park grounds. For those looking to enjoy a short stroll, Oak Shore Park also features a short walking trail. During the winter, there is a sledding hill located in the park for kids to enjoy.
More places to get outside
Hanifl Athletic Fields: As the city of Hugo has grown in recent decades, there was an increasing need to build a large park for the community. In 1990, a large piece of land was acquired in central Hugo on which a Public Works facility, community room, and several athletic fields were built. The community room, known as Hanifl Shelter, is a rentable space that seats up to 40 people. An open-air pavilion is also located in the park for picnicking and shelter uses. The several soccer fields located in the park are used by the city’s athletic leagues and other programs throughout the year. Other features include an asphalt trail, restrooms, and playground equipment.
Irish Avenue Park: Recently purchased in 2010, Irish Park is the largest of all parks in Hugo with 125 acres of land. In the future, the land may be developed as an active park with features such as baseball and soccer fields. Currently, the park is primarily used for hiking, with a 2 mile mowed trail. During the winter, snowmobilers groom an extensive trail for cross-country skiing. Residents also enjoy using the park for archery during the warmer months of the year.
