The first settlers to claim land in the area now known as Hampton, was John M. Bell in the fall of 1854. The Bell family quickly made a home for themselves in Hampton Township and many settlers soon followed them to the area. Later on in 1854, Stephen D. Bell, brother of John Bell, toured the area and later moved his family to the Township.
Other settlers of the area included German immigrants such as Conrad, Peter, and Nicholas Doffing, John J. Fox, Joseph Stumpf, and Nicholas Kranz. Hampton Township was created on April 6th, 1858 and was named after the city of Hampton, Connecticut.
Today, the city of Hampton, Minnesota is a quiet and rural community that has experienced much growth in the last 20 years. The population has grown from 434 in 2000 to nearly 700 residents today.
