The city of Grant, Minnesota was first formed in 1858 as a township when the Territory of Minnesota separated from Wisconsin. Named after Major General Ulysses S. Grant, the township covered a 6 mile by 6 mile area and exclusively became a farming community with several large commercial farms. Grant remained a township until 1996 when the town applied to be incorporated as a city. In the summer of 1996, the town became a city. The reason behind the town wanting to become a city was to protect the natural environment around it and maintain its rural community.
Today, the city of Grant remains a rural community focused on maintaining its character and preventing large scale development in the area. Although the city has lost the majority of its commercial farms, the city still has several hobby farms training and raising horses. Over the years the city has experienced growth and today has a population 4,126. Grant is home to over 1,460 households and 1,230 families. This community is an excellent destination for anyone looking to live a rural lifestyle and still enjoy the benefits of the Twin Cities.
