The city of Bayport, Minnesota started out as three smaller settlements along Lake St. Croix. In 1856, the city of Baytown was platted by lumberman Socrates Nelson and David Loomis around their firm’s sawmill. In 1857, Isaac Staples and Andrew Short platted the city of Bangor to the south of Baytown and William Holcombe platted the city of Middletown to the north of Baytown. In 1873, the St. Croix Railway Improvement Company combined the three cities forming the larger city of South Stillwater, which was incorporated as a village in 1881. The name South Stillwater, caused so much confusion with the city of Stillwater, it was changed in 1922 to Bayport.

Several different businesses began to thrive in the City of Bayport, including lumber companies and boat repair companies. One of the most successful businesses in the community was the Andersen Lumber Company.  The Andersen Lumber Company was started in Hudson, Wisconsin in 1879. After moving to South Stillwater in 1913, the company quickly grew, becoming the most successful business in the St. Croix River Valley. Other businesses that provided employment to local residents were threshing machine companies, furniture and box manufacturers, a brass foundry, printing houses, and a soap factory.

In more recent decades, the City of Bayport has continued to grow and focuses on creating an environment that all residents will grow to love. Bayport is a warm and welcoming community that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Bayport is an excellent town, rich in history and full of great people.
