Christmas Lake is a spring-fed lake covering approximately 265 acres in the western suburbs of Shorewood and Chanhassen. Christmas Lake is known for its exceptional water clarity, the best in the Minneapolis metropolitan area, with a clarity level of 20 feet. This clarity can be attributed to the fact that Christmas Lake is a spring fed lake with a sandy bottom. Although relatively small in area, Christmas Lake becomes deep very quickly at a maximum depth of 87 feet.
Although Christmas Lake is located near to Lake Minnetonka, the lake culture is much different, with fewer powerboats and jet skis due to the much smaller size of the lake in comparison. Christmas Lake is home to a number of native and introduced species of fish, the most prevalent of which are largemouth bass, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish, crappie, northern pike, carp, and rainbow trout. It does have one public access boat launch.
The lake has been highly monitored for zebra muscles and has been treated. It is continually monitored and also the lake association has a private company inspecting boats coming in and going out of the lake looking for any indigenous plant or animal species that have attached to the boat or trailers.
Trumpeter swans have now been recently using the lake as a stop over in their migration south for the winter and can stay around for as long as a month.
