My Grandpa Olson grew up in a rural farm town in the Monticello area of Wright County, Minnesota. In the late 1940’s and early 195
0’s he was in the Navy and fought in the Korean war serving as an ‘Electricians Mate’ on the destroyer ship USS O’Brien DD-725SS. During his service in the military he married my grandmother Ruth, and started a family raising five boys. With hard work, determination (and a lot of ingenuity) he launched his own electrical contracting business in 1959. Originally named ‘Olson’s Electric’ it quickly became ‘Olson & Son’s Electric’ when my uncles joined him.

Almost six decades later, my grandfather’s business is thriving with my brother and father owning and managing it in Monticello, Minnesota.
My grandfather came from an era where he was expected to work for everything he had. He was quiet, introverted, passionate, and worked tirelessly through his blood, sweat and tears to build his business and provide for his family. He lived a full life and accomplished more in 79 years than what many other people have in several lifetimes. His story was filled with a number of exciting adventures and unexpected tragedies that he was forced to overcome.
He was always a fighter and towards the end of his life when he was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, he had a short time to reflect on his life. One of the amazing things he did during this devastating time was gather and archive all the old letters and photographs tha
t had been passed down from my great-grandparents. He also documented hundreds of projector slides and old family 8mm films of the life he shared with his kids growing up. He recorded hours of new videos with his voiceover -sharing stories and providing additional insights on the special moments and friendships their family had experienced through his life.
These priceless treasures of family history would have been lost if he hadn’t taken the time to document and share these memories with us. It was a massive project and a bitter-sweet time full of a wide range of emotions reflecting on where he had come from, what he had overcome, and how he wanted his family in the future to remember him.
Many times our lives can be fast paced, full of so many twists and turns and surprises. In what seems like in a blink of an eye, it’s easy to realize that years (even decades) sometimes have flown by.
Just like my grandfather, I want to remember the ‘good old days.’ I want to share the memories and experiences that helped shaped me into who I am with the people I love the most. At the end of the day, I want to leave a legacy that’s intentional, not forgotten and truly makes a difference in the lives of other people.
Today, especially in this stage of life where I still have young children at home, life can be exhausting. Many days seem VERY long (and mostly overwhelming), but looking back over time, the years seem unbelievably short. I want to remember these precious memories that can seem like a blurb. With the limited time we all have here on earth, I believe our lives are a gift from God and truly a ‘sacred journey.’ Instead of waiting until the end of my life to reflect and document my journey like my grandfather, I’m going to start doing it now, right here-on this website. So that’s what this page is all about; inspiring others to live a great life and share some of the most meaningful memories that have shaped me into the person I am.
From one traveler to another on this journey we call life, I invite you to explore and discover what I truly think it means living a great life! David Olson
