The city now known as Andover was first organized in 1857 with the name Round Lake Township. In 1860 the name was changed to Grow Township named after senator Galusha A. Grow from Pennsylvania. At this time Grow Township included the area of Ham Lake and had a population of 330 people.

In 1972 the Board of Supervisors for Grow Township realized the Township was growing quickly and they thought the community would be better served by the government. So the Board voted in favor to proceed with incorporating the community as the Village of Andover. In 1974, the Village of Andover became a city of the 4th class.

In recent decades, the city has continued to grow and has become one of the most attractive communities in the Twin Cities. Since 1980 the population of Andover has grown from 9,387 to over 31,700 today. It is also home 9,811 houses and 8,357 families. On average 50 new houses are being constructed each year and the city is home to 400 acres of community and neighborhood parks. Several new businesses are being built throughout the city and has increased commercial activity. Andover also boasts an excellent educational program and is one of the 2 best school districts in the state.
