The City of Vermillion received its name from the river running through the town. Vermillion was a name given by the Dakota Indians and first showed up in Nicollet’s map in 1843. It is theorized that the name probably originated from the stunning orange and red-colored ocher that were obtained by the tribe from the Chimney Rock in Marshan.
In 1858, the Vermillion Township was organized. Later, in 1881, the Township was incorporated into a Village. The first post office lasted from 1855-1858 and its present day post office was constructed in 1874. The city of Vermillion, the town by the river, remains a small, tight-knit community of around 400 residents.
