Lake Calhoun is a beautiful lake located just south of downtown Minneapolis and is apart of the city’s Chain of Lakes. Lake Calhoun is the biggest lake within the City of Minneapolis and is a popular destination for outdoor activities year round. Calhoun is surrounded by a city park and circled by walking and biking trails.Popular activities at Lake Calhoun include boating, sailing, canoeing, swimming, walking, biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and much more. The Lake itself occupies an area of 401 acres with a maximum depth of 87 feet. Lake Calhoun is also a great spot for fishing with numerous species of fish including bluegill, tiger muskie, northern pike, largemouth bass, and walleye. Lake Calhoun is a beautiful area full of activity year round, making it one of the most popular lakes in Minneapolis.

 

The area around Lake Calhoun was first inhabited by the Dakota Indians who named the lake Bde Maka Ska meaning White Earth Lake. The Dakota also had another name for lake, Mde Med’oza, meaning Loon Lake. After settlers began to move into the area, they adopted the Dakota name for the lake calling it Lake Medoza. Later the name was changed to Lake Calhoun after U.S. Secretary of War John C. Calhoun, who helped construct Fort Snelling.

 

Lake Calhoun is surrounded by several neighborhoods with excellent housing and businesses options. The neighborhood of West Calhoun is one of the most attractive neighborhoods in the area because of its numerous amenities and upscale feel. West Calhoun is always buzzing with activity. From numerous walking and biking paths to upscale shopping and dining, West Calhoun has it all. The majority of homes within West Calhoun date back to the early 1900s and are full of architectural beauty.

 

Lake Calhoun is surrounded by several parks and beaches that all residents in the area can use and enjoy.

 

Lake Calhoun Park is full of recreational activities surrounding Lake Calhoun. Lake Calhoun Park features a 3 mile loop around the lake, archery range, beach, biking, boat dock, fishing pier, picnic area, soccer field, softball field, volleyball court, and more. Lake Calhoun Park is the perfect place to enjoy numerous recreational activities while enjoying the beauty of Lake Calhoun.

 

Lake Calhoun offers three different beaches including the 32nd Street Beach, North Beach, and Thomas Beach. The 32nd Street Beach is located on the east side of Lake Calhoun offering excellent swimming and  playground equipment. North Beach is located on the north side of Lake Calhoun offering an excellent swimming beach, playground equipment, and picnic tables. Thomas Beach is located on the south end of Lake Calhoun offering a great swimming beach, sand volleyball court, floating swim dock, and more.

 

Lake Calhoun is surrounded by numerous shopping, dining, and entertainment options that can meet the needs of all people.

 

Uptown is a vibrant community just east of Lake Calhoun full of entertainment, businesses, shopping options, restaurants, and more. Uptown is a favorite among local residents for upscale shopping, dining, nightlife, and cultural events including art fairs, Uptown Tavern, and Uptown Theatre, and more. Uptown is an electric commercial district full of the finest shopping,dining, and entertainment options.

 

Uptown Tavern is an American Bar and Grill featuring great food, craft beers, and entertainment. Uptown Tavern offers excellent appetizers and burgers along with 30 different craft beers including local brews. Uptown Tavern’s menu features wings, sliders, wraps, soups, salads, and burgers along with great appetizers including fish tacos, spicy chicken quesadillas, cajun shrimp, chicken tenders, tater tots, cheese curds, and more. Calhoun Square is an urban shopping and dining destination located in Uptown just southeast of Lake of the Isles. Restaurants in the area include Famous Dave’s, Libertine, Jimmy John’s, Dogwood Coffee, Darbar India Bar and Grill, and Stella’s Fish Cafe. Calhoun Square offers some of the best shopping and dining in the area.
