Located on the outskirts of the south metro, Farmington has a fast growing community that enjoys the spacious setting of the 15 square mile city. With 22,000 residents estimated in the 2010 census, the city of Farmington’s population has nearly doubled in population since 2000. The community of Farmington is largely shaped by its events, amenities, businesses, and organizations.

Farmington, Minnesota hosts a variety of different, annual events throughout the year that serve to bring the community together in celebration. Farmington’s most popular event is the Dakota County Fair. The fair draws more visitors each year than any other county fair and its fair ground space is the largest in the state with 360 acres of land. The fair was established in 1858, mainly as a one week, agricultural event in August , which it still is. A wide assortment of different foods are sold at the fair by different food vendors including potato skins, gyros, pretzels, Hawaiian shaved ice, BBQ, and more. Dakota County Fair has almost 200 vendors that set up shop at the fair each year. A carnival is also located within the fairgrounds, where kids can enjoy different rides like a merry go round, slides, bumper cars, ferriswheel, and more. Other activities include talent shows, an art exhibition, petting zoos, a demo derby, a grandstand, and music.

Another popular event in the city of Farmington is the Minnesota Soybean Festival in the month of May. The event pays tribute to soybeans, which are a significant crop in the local farm community, with different activities and events. The event features food, a parade, music, and games for kids. One of the main features of the event is the ceremonial dumping of soybeans over the mayor’s head. Other activities include a tennis tournament, trout fishing competition, and paint facing and sidewalk drawing. In the month June, Farmington also host its annual Dew Run with half a mile, 1 mile, and 4-mile races. The course is flat, scenic, and certified so that even the most elite runners.

 

Many different amenities shape the community of Farmington, Minnesota. One of these amenities is the Farmington Library, which is a part of the Dakota County Library system. As a part of the Dakota County Library System, Farmington’s residents have access to a substantial amount of information in the county’s databases. The library also offers different programs for seniors and youth. Southern Hills Golf Course is another amenity located in Farmington. The golf club maintains an 18-hole, par 71 course measuring over 6,300 acres and offer both challenges and fun for all skills levels. The club also offers classes for all ages and junior golf leagues.

One of Farmington residents favorite restaurants is the Farmington Steak House. The steak house offers delicious food at a great price and is family friendly restaurant. During the summer months, the Farmington Outdoor Pool is one of the city’s most popular destinations where residents can enjoy slides, a wading pool, and two meter boards.

Farmington’s is primarily an agricultural town, but its largest employer is the Independent School District 192, which employees approximately 900 people. One most influential organizations in Farmington is the Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network. This non-profit organization mission is to reach deep into neighborhoods and communities to ensure Service members and their families are not alone before, during, and after employment.
